    Definitely intend to read the Alchemist, but Gilead was AP required reading and I /hated/ it with a strong passion (which I had until then only reserved for Grapes of Wrath).

    Perhaps my religious (or rather non-religous) views got in the way of my enjoying Gilead. Though, everyone in the class hated it so maybe it is an age thing.
