Okay . . . picture this (really) worst-case scenario: It’s cold and raining, your boyfriend/girlfriend has just dumped you, you’ve just been fired, the pile of unpaid bills is sky-high, your beloved pet has recently died, and you think you’re coming down with a cold. All you want to do (other than hiding under the covers) is to curl up with a good book, something warm and comforting that will make you feel better.
Answer: Probably Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, or something from childhood like Charlotte’s Web or The Chronicles of Narnia. While I do read for comfort at times, if I really feel horrible I’d probably be more apt to go to my movie standbys. See my Thursday Thirteen below for those.

Movies are a good choice too.
How funny that this is the question of the week. Just last night I was thinking of asking a question on my blog asking people to say what books were “comfort” food to them! Anyway, to answer the question…probably for many years the answer would have been Gone With The Wind. There was a time I read it practically every semester as I got stressed out by finals. But lately, I’d have to say Ender’s Game or the Chronicles of Narnia.
CS Lewis is definitely in. Another comfort “read”.
I agree, if I am really sick or down I’d probably go with movies instead of books — I just wouldn’t have the concentration for books. But I do have a few literary comfort foods.
Love the title of your blog!
I’m definitely with you on the movies. I usually
can’t concentrate when I’m really depressed.
Sleepless in Seattle is one of my favorites!!
CS Lewis would be incredibly good comfort reading!
Yeah, a good movie would be in order.
Good choices. I’m one of those who can’t concentrate to read when I’m totally depressed, but if I do I go for fluff. Pride & Prejudice would be great, though. It’s very smile-inducing.
Oh I love Charlotte’s Web! Of of my childhood favorite. I also love “Pride & Predudice as well! Great choice for answer!
Happy BBT!
Similar to me, I said kids books and Anne Rice.
When I’m really down it’s a movie rather than a book for me, too.
A good kid’s book would definitely work for me. (But I like the movie idea more!)
I agree… If I’m too depressed, I’d rather watch a funny movie rather than read.
