BTT: Footprints or Preservation

btt button

How many of us write notes in our books? Are you a Footprint Leaver or a Preservationist?

My answer: I’m definitely a preservationist.  I do write on sticky notes, particularly if it’s for a book discussion.  I’ll also admit that I write and underline galore when it’s a cheap Dover edition.  I love doing that!  I just can’t bring myself to do it in ‘regular’ books, though.

  • I can’t do it in any book, that is not a text book.

  • I prefer to use sticky notes too–or my little notebook which I’ve taken to keeping by my side when I read. Right now the notebook is small enough I can fit it in my purse along with my book, fortunately. :-)

  • I will only write in a book if it’s assigned reading. This includes textbooks, of course, but as an English major, there were plenty of assigned novels. You had to mark up the book–even if it was just underlining or arrows or asterisks. But for normal reading, I’m more prone to yellow post it notes.

  • I admit I do write on sticky notes but I keep my books in very good condition although I must admit, once I buy and love a book I very seldom ever get rid of it again.

  • I haven’t written in a book since I left school. I do turn down pages though to remind me of things I want to go back to record – it feels less destructive to me but it drives my husband mad!

  • What makes a book a regular book? Happy BTT.

  • I am definitely a preservationist. I use book mark post its – they come in a kaleidoscope of colours. Sometimes I theme them using different colours for different themes. If I wan tto write more I use a larger stick it. i find they really ‘help’ when I come to write my review. So often a passage really resonates in that moment at that pooint in the book. I alos keep a written journal for my reading. I use my beautiful Parker fountain pen and write in purple ink!
I also like to use favourite book marks – I got into big trouble as a little girl if I turned down a page corner….

  • I’ll be the rebel on your list – I want to write in books! I like getting a used book or library book that’s been underlined, or commented on. It makes me wonder why that line was important to someone, or notice a particular passage more carefully.
I don’t buy a lot of books, and I wouldn’t write in one that wasn’t mine, but I’d like to do more notetaking in books.
And I fold down corners of pages!
