2nds Challenge Completed!

The idea of this challenge was to read a second book from an author you enjoyed the first time around. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to read some books that I had wanted to get to but hadn’t had time for yet. I really liked all my choices and will be reading more from all three authors.

Thanks, Joy!

I read the following:

1. Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith FINISHED
This book is a sequel to The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. I plan to read the rest of this series as well.

2. Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho FINISHED
Loved The Alchemist. Looking forward to even more by Coelho.

3. This Year It Will Be Different by Maeve Binchy FINISHED
First Binchy was Evening Class, which I really enjoyed. Any input on which book should be my third from this author?

Bonus:
Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks
The first book I read by Brooks was March. I plan on reading her new novel, People of the Book, in January.

  • Congratulations on finishing the challenge. I love Maeve Binchy. My favorite books written by her are TARA ROAD and SCARLET FEATHER. If you read these, read TARA ROAD first – some of the same characters are in SCARLET FEATHER.

  • Wait – I was wrong. You need to read SCARLET FEATHER before you read QUENTINS (another good one!). But still read TARA ROAD first.

  • Congratulations on finishing the challenge. I’m in the middle of my last book for this one.

I’ve listened to the entire No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series as audiobooks. They’re wonderful for listening and the reader (Lisette Lecat) is a pleasure to hear. They’ve made great driving around town books for me because I get my audiobook time in 10 – 20 minute chunks.

  • caught your blog from LT — very “challenging” and looks cool too! I’ll have to come back with more time and do some review reading….

  • Glad you completed a challenge. I’ve never even started one!

  • Lynn had good suggestions on the Binchy reads. They aren’t a series, but many of the characters appear in Quentins.
Her newest book, Days of Nights and Stars or some combinations of those words was good too. Nothing heavy, and this one was set in Greece – I read it before I went on my Meditereannean cruise.

Well done on finishing the challenge; this is the one I have the greatest worry about not finishing. It’s really not looking good. Oh well, I’ll read the books eventually.

  • I read This Year It Will Be Different almost every year. I love how it contains Christmas stories which are less than perfect, since almost every commercial wants us to believe perfect is within our reach.

  • Congratulations on finishing the challenge! I really enjoy Alexander McCall Smith’s #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. And I really must read more by Coelho. I loved The Alchemist.

  • 3M

Lynne, thanks I’ll look out for those Binchys.
SuziQ, I hope to get to at least a couple in the series in 2008.
Teacherdad, I like your site, too!
Raidergirl, you can do it, you can do it!
Bellezza, I know, NO ONE can live up to what society/TV deems is perfect!
LF–I loved The Alchemist as well. I want to read 1-2 Coelhos in ’08.

  • My favorite Binchy is Circle of Friends. A wonderful book, I’ve re-read it multiple times.

Congrats on finishing so many challenges! I have one left in the 2nds challenge I’m working on now…Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is a definitely a challenge picking this one up so soon after having a baby, but I’m plugging away one page at a time!

  • Congrats! I’ve given up on most of my challenges, but it’s fun to see people finish them!
