I was surprised when I looked over my books read in 2007 and realized that very few of them (under 5 titles!) were published in 2007. So, of course I had another idea for a challenge. It’s called The Pub ’08 Challenge, and the objective is to read titles published in 2008. There are very few rules:
- Read a minimum of 8 books published in 2008. (Library books are acceptable!)
- No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
- At least 4 titles must be fiction.
- Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
- Titles may be changed at any time.
If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, head on over to ‘The Pub‘ to sign up. You don’t have to list your titles yet, but it would be nice if you gave a link to a post announcing the challenge. I’ll provide a Mr. Linky for your book reviews as well. Hope to see you there!
A start to my list:
- Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell
- People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
- Sitting Practice by Caroline Adderson
- The House at Riverton by Kate Morton (previously published in the UK and Australia, but first published in the US in 2008)
- The Translator by Daoud Hari
- Winter Haven by Athol Dickson
- The Sister by Poppy Adams
- Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos
- Detective Story by Kertesz

This challenge means buying new books, which I simply cannot afford to do, so I’m sorry, but I will not be joining this challenge.
Library books are acceptable!
I’m in! I need to work on my list…just came back from BAM and I had several 2008 books already.
I don’t really have a list of 2008 books yet I just pick stuff up as I go along but this is a great challenge!
This sounds fun! I haven’t work on the list yet, but I’m definitely in!
That sounds really fun I’m doing the 888 challenge but I am sure I can squeeze in 8 more books. I’ll have to start on a list!
Darn you, woman! I’m giving in to temptation on this one. I always read a mess of new books (and as you know, I don’t like YA, so that’s not a problem). I’m in. I’ll put up my post (and provide a link) tomorrow.
Oh yes! Bagsy a spot on this one. I’ll link up officially in the New Year.
Authors I know are publishing in 2008 and who will definitely feature on my list are: Kate Atkinson, Charles Cumming, Linda Grant
I’m sure there’ll be plenty of others though.
One question: Do paperbacks published in 2008 count?
So glad you’re all thinking of joining!
Kookiejar, I thought maybe you’d join. You’re always on the ball with the new titles!
Lizzy, no, if it’s been published in hardback before 2008, it doesn’t count.
I’d like to try this. Most if not all of the books I read for this challenge would probably be review books so I definitely can’t make a list beforehand.
I am still dreaming up a list, but I think I will add a placeholder on my blog so I can officially sign up for this challenge. So far, I have three ARCs to count for this challenge, plus I will probably read that Anne Rice book when it comes out. (Boy, I would love to score an ARC on that one!). Look, that’s four already – I am half-way there!
I would really love to know what books will more than likely end up as a NYT Notable or on the short lists for Booker and Pulitzer prizes. Whenever those lists come out, I usually only know a few titles, which is slightly embarrassing when you consider how many books I read!
=) Jill

Jill, I know. Last year I read The Road before it was announced as the Pulitzer (and before Oprah). It was a good feeling!
I just signed up – and then realised I have a question! Can I read paperbacks that are published in 2008? i don’t like reading hardbacks as a rule – they’re too big and heavy to carry around!
