Last week we talked about the books you liked best from 2007. So this week, what with it being a new year, and all, we’re looking forward….
What new books are you looking forward to most in 2008? Something new being published this year? Something you got as a gift for the holidays? Anything in particular that you’re planning to read in 2008 that you’re looking forward to? A classic, or maybe a best-seller from 2007 that you’re waiting to appear in paperback?
My answer: Without a doubt, the book that I am most looking forward to reading is War and Peace. I’ve wanted to read this for forever! I’m so glad I’m getting around to it. In looking at my reading schedule, here are some others I’m looking forward to:
- Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell
- Silence by Shusaku Endo
- The entire Harry Potter series (for the 1st time!)
- The Secret Lives of People in Love by Simon Van Booy (I’ve heard so many bloggers love this!)
- Middlemarch by George Eliot
- finishing Kristin Lavransdatter
Have a good year, everyone!

Gosh I have started War and Peace twice and never finished it – good luck.
The Harry Potter books are so good and no waiting for the next one for you – enjoy!
I am looking forward to Kristin but I decided that it was too daunting for this year. I also would like to read War and Peace with the group but that seems like too much too.
Looking forward to comparing notes on the titles we have in common too!
Alix, a big group of us are reading it together. I’m glad to have the accountability!
Amy, I was sooooo scared of Kristin, but it’s actually a pretty easy read. It is broken up into three books, so you could always just say, ‘I’ll read the first book and see how it goes.’ I’m halfway through and enjoying it tremendously. There is quite a bit about Christian faith and what it means to be a believer. I think you’d enjoy it.
Great selections! Happy reading through this and much more!
I can’t imagine the pleasure of having all the Harry Potter’s to read for the first time. I’m green with envy.
I hope you enjoy the Harry Potters! They’re worth all the hype!
I just popped over from the BTT blog and I have to say that I love your header and background.
Good luck with your 2008 reading.
I’m most excited about War and Peace as well!
So, I am not the last person in America who hasn’t read HP! I thought I was. I will be curious to see if you enjoy them. I have seen some of the movies but it doesn’t seem interesting to me, but all of my HP-fan friends think I would enjoy the books nonetheless.
To answer your question, right now I am most looking forward to reading “Atonement” by Ian McEwan.
All the best,
Jill
There are a lot of readers talking about “War and Peace” so I will have to check this out. I’m not done with HP series, only at #4.
Happy reading!
I read War & Peace with my online bookclub in 2006 and I’m really proud I finished it. I’ve heard so many good things about The Secret Lives of People in Love.
Hi 3M,
Just wanted to say thanks for dropping by my site and welcoming me to the decades challenge. I’m already into Oscar Wilde. (every line from whom seems dense with meaning…!)
Good luck with your reading list!
Ah… Middlemarch… that’s a great one too. I need to re-read it one of these years!
I can’t wait for War and Peace either! My son bought it for me for Christmas, and I, too, have been wanting to read it forever. Some of my favorite novels are Russian works: Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, etc. Tolstoy is especially wonderful. Now, here’s my only problem: I have TWO book clubs, each with their own required books, and it’s annoying me a little bit that I have to segue from my own choice to my obligations. Goal for the New Year: rid oneself of obligations?
It’ll be great fun to discuss War and Peace with you, when I get to it. By the way, do you know of the Russian Literature Challenge? It’s on my sidebar, but I’m sorry, I can’t remember the name of the link right now.
Bellezza, yes I’m doing the Russian Lit challenge as well! A group of us our reading W&P over here, if you’re interested:

I hope you love Simon’s book as much as I did! It really has stuck with me. I love his “voice”.
Awesome blog — Quality and Quantity! War & Peace is on my TBR list too, but the “R” is for “retired” ’cause I’m not even going to buy a book that thick until I am…
Enjoy Harry Potter! I hope to read Middlemarch this year as well if I have time.
