If you didn’t understand what what was going on without a crib-sheet, you probably shouldn’t be watching science fiction movies. 2001 possessed one of the most simplistic plot lines imaginable, rendered brilliantly for it’s time and place and level of cinematic technology. There are areas of interpretation, as in any good creative project, and those are part of the brilliance of the film. And if people read the book first, which was based on the movie (the movie was actually very loosely based on a Clark short story)then you read an interpretation that will set the meaning in stone for you rather than letting you stretch your imagination. But then again, if you didn’t understand it to begin with, the imagination department is probably on vacation any way. Of course, thinking creatively isn’t everyone’s cup of proverbs, anyway.
