Southern Reading Challenge Y’all

southernreading2.jpgWhen I saw Maggie’s post ‘Southern Reading Challenge Y’all’, I just had to laugh. Have any of you been near Florence, Ky — just south of Cincinnati? There’s a water tower there right on the interstate that used to say “Florence Mall,” but they (whoever ‘they’ are) decided that that was free advertising for the Mall so they were going to have to paint over it. What did they paint over it? Florence, Y’all. I still get a chuckle from it whenever I pass it, and it’s been there for years.

The challenge this year is 3 books by southern authors in southern settings, and it’ll run May 15 through August 15.

Here are my choices for the challenge (I may add alternates later):

  1. Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote
  2. Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore
  3. Quite a Year for Plums by Bailey White

Alternates:

  1. The Bible Salesman by Clyde Edgerton

Thanks for hosting again, Maggie!

Thank you so much for including my book on your summer reading challenge — that’s quite an honor.

But in case you’re looking for it at your local bookstore — the title is Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen!

    Thanks and have fun reading!

  • Thanks for stopping by, Susan, and I’m so sorry I botched your title! I fixed it (hiding in corner now)…

  • I loved Looking Salvation at the Dairy Queen. I can’t wait for her next book. :)

  • I’ve been past the “Florence Y’all” water tower many times!! I can’t believe they did that – go figure.

  • Love it! Our town motto is “Not the Largest just the Nicest” and well, I like “Como Y’all” better!

Thank for joining the SRC2 and spreading the word! How cool the author stopped by!?! So, I’m guessing her book is set in the south? Wonder if she would like to give away a signed copy? Hum? ;D

  • I have been following your blog and love the enthusiasm for the Southern Reading Challenge and Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen! I thought I’d let ya’ll know that Susan Gregg Gilmore can do even better than sending a signed book — if you go to her website (www.susangregggilmore.com) she has a contest going right now. You can enter your “best DQ memory” and have a chance to win a DQ Blizzard everyday for one year (yep, 365 Blizzards!). Susan and I are friends (we’re moms of daughters who go to school together) and I’m her publicist, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell you about the contest. Also, if you read her book and decide you want to use it as a book group/club pick, we can get her to call in be a part of the discussion:)

I met Susan at the Kentucky Book Fair, Frankfort Convention Center, Lexington, KY. while in town to visit my daughter and her family this past week-end. I bought the book for my best friend, Barbara but decided to read it on the way home to GA. I really enjoyed it and found it really easy to read. Now I can’t wait to give it to her.

    Hi everyone!

Tonya, it’s great to hear you liked the book — I really enjoyed meeting you at the Lexington festival. And thanks again for chatting with me — it was a pretty slow day!

And Maggie, if you still want that signed copy, let me know where I need to send it and all of that.

    Take Care Everyone!

    Susan
