Hosted by Trish, this challenge has its own blog here.
You can read more about this challenge by clicking on the icon. I’m going to do option 1, which is just to read 5 classics in July through December. There is also a bonus book that can be selected from a list of potential future classics chosen by the participants of the challenge. Trish has asked us all to do a classics meme as well. My answers are here, with my book choices for the challenge below.
1. My favorite classic is Jane Eyre. Words can’t describe how much I love this book. A close second is Persuasion.
2. The classic I had the toughest time finishing is The Red Badge of Courage. Blech.
3. I would recommend…Fahrenheit 451…to someone who doesn’t read a lot of classics or who doesn’t generally like classics because it is a short book and frighteningly relevant to today.
4. To me, a classic book is a book that people still enjoy reading after 50 years or more.
5. The type of relationship I have with classics is a great one. We’ve had a love affair for over 30 years now.
**6. The BONUS book I nominate for a potential future classic is The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman
I’ll choose my main 5 selections from the following list:
- Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
- Dracula by Bram Stoker
- Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery
- Anne of the Island by L. M. Montgomery
- Kristin Lavransdatter II: The Wife by Sigrid Undset
- Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak
- Middlemarch by George Eliot
- Washingon Square by Henry James
- Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
- War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
- Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
I’ll choose my bonus book from the following:
- Life of Pi
by Yann Martel - Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
- Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
- Something Wicked This Way Comes by Bradbury
- Persepolis by Satrapi
I LOVE classics, so thanks, Trish!!

Great list Michelle! I hope you enjoy Dracula as much as I am enjoying it!
I’m also attempting War and Peace for this Challenge, will be interesting to see how it goes and what someone else thinks (if you pick it).
I loved The Poisonwood Bible and just picked up Ender’s Game at the store–might read it for the challenge.
Thanks for playing along with the meme! Jane Eyre seems to be a popular one with people. I agree that Fahrenheit 451 is a great one for people who are cautious about classics.
I’m glad you’ll be joining us!
By the way, the sign ups are officially on the site.
