I thought this book was a great read. Yes, it's disturbing and frightening (not only is it an animal, but a very strong one that could accidentally kill you), but I think the bear is a metaphor for the main character's sexual awakening. The feelings of extreme discomfort the reader feels are meant to make us empathize with the trepidation of freeing oneself of shackles of societal norms (sorry for the cliché at the end, but you know what I mean). When you read it, just remember it's a story, not real life. If it makes you squirm, it's supposed to.

I see this book at thrift shops all time and always think maybe this time I'll pick it up. But the synopsis of the plot just turns my stomach. But I've wondered could it really be that sick, I mean it did win the GG after all? Now I know it can. And now I know I'll never bother. Thanks for the review!
