Russian Reading Challenge Complete

russianreading.jpgI love Russian literature and was very much looking forward to this challenge last January.  Although I completed the challenge, I’m very disappointed in myself as I really wanted to read War and Peace and finish Crime and Punishment.   Perhaps 2009 will be the year I get to them.  One highlight of this challenge turned out to be Sofia Petrovna (five stars), which will be one of my best reads of 2008.  Also, although I didn’t care for it, I’m glad I finally read Lolita.  That’s one I’m happy to be able to cross off my tbr list.

Thanks so much, Sharon, for hosting this challenge!

The books I read:

  1. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
  2. Broccoli and Other Tales of Food and Love by Vapnyar
  3. Sofia Petrovna by Lydia Chukovskaya
  4. Taras Bulba by Nikolai Gogol (review to come)

Africa Reading Challenge Complete

Africa Reading Challenge
January 1 – December 31, 2008

Dave from Siphoning Off A Few Thoughts was the host for the Africa Reading Challenge.  The goal of the challenge was to read a minimum of six books which:

…either were written by African writers, take place in Africa, or deal significantly with Africans and African issues.

The books I read:

  1. The Translator by Daoud Hari (Sudan/Chad)
  2. Life & Times of Michael K by Coetzee (South Africa)
  3. The Only Road North by Mirandette (multiple countries)
  4. Things Fall Apart by Achebe (Nigeria)
  5. Purple Hibiscus by Adichie (Nigeria)
  6. Zenzele by J. Nozipo Marrire (Zimbabwe) (review to come)

I enjoyed all the books I read, but my favorite by far was Purple Hibiscus.
