Do you always read what you know you will like, or do you sometimes try to stretch yourself to see ‘what’s out there’? I go in cycles. Sometimes I have no patience for something that doesn’t fit my personality, and other times I do like to be exposed to books or other art that is far from my own personal norm.
Skim is not something I probably would have picked up if not for the Canadian Challenge or the Graphic Novel Challenge. It was also a quick read. While I very much sympathize with the typical teenage angst in the book, with themes of suicide, w*tchcr*ft, and hom*s*xual*ty, Skim just wasn’t for me. I do give the author credit, though, for writing the characters in such a way that the reader does feel their emotional pain. That alone, though, just wasn’t enough for me to enjoy the book.

I actually do try to read books that are outside of my regular reads. I either end up loving the book or hating it and there isn’t a lot in between.
I almost read seasonally. Feb- March I tend to be more adventurous, trying new things and reading on a whim. Summer is for fun lazy reading…I might read new people, but I will tend towards subject matter and genres that are comfortable. In the fall I get adventurous again, but my holiday reading it almost always cozy.
Hey! It makes sense to me!
Sorry to hear that this one didn’t work for you
I loved it…but I can see how it’s not one for everyone!
hmm.. it all depends on my mood! I mean some days I am very brave and pick up things that I will usually not read.. and some days.. I just stick to the normal!
Skim sounds interesting, but something I would just give a pass! thank u.
I don’t really venture out of my reading box often, either. I am more likely to try certain genres than others, though. I probably will never really delve into chick lit, no matter how great reviews of books may be. But one I’ve wanted to get into, but just don’t know where to start, is science fiction. Graphic novels don’t do much for me, either, though I do think they’re pretty to look at!
