I thought that I’d at least try out the series that everyone’s been talking about – I guess it’s a super hit on HBO as well. I was a little worried it would be too graphic for me and it was, but I’ll probably at least try the next book in the series and take it one book at a time.
Sookie is a telepath and can hear everyone’s thoughts — except vampires. So when ‘Vampire Bill’ comes into the bar where Sookie works and Sookie hears nothing, it’s a blessed relief to her. I won’t say much else about the story, but it was a nice diversion when I was flying and at the airport. Like I said, I’ll at least read one more and may even check out the DVDs. I am wondering, though, if Stephenie Meyer had read this series before starting Twilight. There seems to be some similar ideas, but maybe all vampire fiction has some basic commonalities.
2001, 242 pp.

a lot of vampire fiction uses similar rules and ideas, but its whether the writer can create deep and unique characters.
I’m glad you gave this one a try even if it was outside your comfort zone.
I’ve added your link to my review here: http://www.savvyverseandwit.com/2009/08/dead-until-dark-by-charlaine-harris.html
I haven’t been tempted to try these. I thoroughly enjoyed Colleen Gleason’s The Gardella Vampire Chronicles, but didn’t care for Twilight. And I guess I’m really not much into Vampire books. There sure are a lot of them, tho. Does this series contain some humor? For some reason I thought it did.
Yeah, it is funny in parts, but I expect it might be too graphic for you. It’s definitely becoming that way for me.
I wasn’t super impressed with this series. I mean to read more one of these days to make sure, though. I do plan to watch the tv series soon…
I’m glad you liked this one! I have it and haven’t start reading it yet. I should start soon if I want to get to the end of the challenge!
I too wasn’t overly impressed with the book, though I enjoyed the first television series. I haven’t decided whether to read more yet.
Did u find any similarities between this and Interview with the Vampire?
I so want to read this one!!
Veens, not really. Interview with the Vampire is more of a ‘classic’ style, while this series is defintely modern.
Are you part of the Sookie Stackhouse challenge? Beth Fish Reads is running the challenge on her blog right now. I’ve read 5 books in a row within 2 weeks. Its easy and fun to read though it gets a tad predictable after the 3rd book.
I was thinking of joining the challenge, but I don’t think I’ll complete the series.
I haven’t read this series, and now I don’t know if I can since I love the HBO show. I have heard that the show and the books are quite different. I can definitely tell you that the show can be very graphic at times (the opening title credits make me want to throw up) so you may not like that aspect of it. But other than that, I think the show is great!
Hmm sorry you didn’t rate this much higher. There are some out of the mould vampire books out there, but a lot do have very similar ideas and can be quite samey if you read too many together. I haven’t started this series yet but am really looking forward to it.
