Books vs. Movies

Suggested by: Superfastreader:

Books and films both tell stories, but what we want from a book can be different from what we want from a movie. Is this true for you? If so, what’s the difference between a book and a movie?

I like comparing books and the movies they’re based on. Usually I’m a little disappointed that they left something or other out of the movie, but I understand they can’t include everything. What I really don’t like is when they completely change an event or character from the original story. I really didn’t like how they changed Faramir’s character in Lord of the Rings, for instance. It was a small change, but I hated it because I always admired his character in the book. Occasionally the movie is better than the novel. I like books for the development of the characters, and movies for action and scenery.

  • Writing guides, grammar books, punctuation how-tos . . . do you read them? Not read them? How many writing books, grammar books, dictionaries–if any–do you have in your library?

Answer: I have them, but I don’t use them that much. I use the online dictionary and thesaurus at times, though. I love grammar and do have quite a few grammar books, but that’s mostly because I was an English teacher for a few years.

BTT Springing

Do your reading habits change in the Spring? Do you read gardening books? Even if you don’t have a garden? More light fiction than during the Winter? Less? Travel books? Light paperbacks you can stick in a knapsack?

Or do you pretty much read the same kinds of things in the Spring as you do the rest of the year?

My reading habits don’t change that much as far as content.  I’m not much of a gardener, so I don’t go there.  It’s difficult for me to get into much non-fiction at all, in fact.  But, generally I do find it a little more difficult to keep up the same reading pace that I do in the winter — mostly because we do more things as a family that involve getting away from the house and being outside.  April might be the exception as I’ll probably get at least 12 books in this month due to ample reading time on planes and in airports.

I’m definitely ready for warmer weather, though.  It was a long, cold winter here!

  • Pick up the nearest book. (I’m sure you must have one nearby.)
  • Turn to page 123.
  • What is the first sentence on the page?
  • The last sentence on the page?
  • Now . . . connect them together….
(And no, you may not transcribe the entire page of the book–that’s cheating!)

Something boring and horrible: Death, that rapist, who comes in and walks around, and will not say what it is he wants, until he takes it. There was a path, I thought — I really thought that there must be a path — and Liam had wandered off it, and I wasn’t going out there to look for him, not this time.

I didn’t come up with a story for in-between the sentences as I thought these two were interesting enough just to stand on their own merits.

BTT Heroine

Who is your favorite female lead character? And why? (And yes, of course, you can name more than one . . . I always have trouble narrowing down these things to one name, why should I force you to?)

 My answer:

Jane Eyre, of course.  She endures persecution, stays true to her values, and still gets the guy in the end.  What more could you ask for?

BTT – Format

All other things (like price and storage space) being equal, given a choice in a perfect world, would you rather have paperbacks in your library? Or hardcovers? And why?

My answer:
My favorite format is the trade paperback. It’s light, portable, and most importantly, easier to pack and move if you relocate. When you have over 50 book boxes to move like I did, your movers (my husband and teenage son in my case) will thank you if most of them are paperbacks!
