I’m not a fan of hers, and the only movie I’ve ever liked her in was the first Pirates of the Caribbean. (And don’t get me started on why the <a

The scenery and the music were so beautiful. Carey Mulligan was fantastic. And the film affected me way more than the book did. Ishiguro is a terrific writer, but at the end of the book I really did question whether they had a soul or not. The way the characters were portrayed on film erased that question in my mind.

I highly recommend this movie, but I would hope that you’d read the book first.

Grade: A+

Once you’ve got a lampost‘)

This week was a really good reading week. Being able to do nothing but lie and down and watch TV or read helped. I finished up On Beauty, read Crooked Letter Crooked Letter in one sitting and then read How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe (which I loved) in just two days. It really feels good to be reading again. I don’t know if any of you noticed, since I didn’t really come out and say it, but I didn’t read (I should say complete) anything for the last 6 months of last year. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. I picked up several books and read a few chapters or maybe halfway through, and one book even 3/4 of the way through. Just couldn’t finish anything. Like I said, it was a bad year. But I’m off to the races now and it feels good to be back in the saddle reading again.

Today I decided to participate in The Big Game’s On Readathon, hosted by Jenn of Jenn’s Bookshelves. I’m actually a football girl. I love it. But this year I didn’t really watch it at all, mostly because the Denver Broncos were out of it so early. Sooo, while I’ll probably watch it and have it on mute, I am going to be reading during the game (and before and after it as well).

Here’s my lineup (hee hee) for today:

Moon over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool (this year’s Newbery winner)

Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi (this year’s Printz winner)

Hopefully there will be a couple of touchdowns. (I couldn’t resist.)

Happy reading to all the other readathoners today!
<p

However, I still had enough reading time to finish Small Island by Andrea Levy, and I hope to finish On Beauty by Zadie Smith by January 31. Both are Orange winners, and while great reads, I was disappointed that neither of them were in the 4.5 or 5 star range. I suspect Home by Marilynne Robinson will be, though, so I’m considering reading that in February.

Even though Orange January is over, I thought February could be Book Award Month for me. Aside from Home, I want to read the latest Newbery winner, Moon over Manifest, and the latest Printz, Ship Breaker. I might also try to read the Pulitzer-winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. By reading that book, I’ll have read the last 12 Pulitzers. Not sure what I’ll read if there’s any time left in the month after that. I might just break into fantasy award winners.

Is anyone else reading in a theme for February?

Sunday Salon 01.23.11

sunday salon

bloggiesta
<guid

I’m also beginning to watch some Oscar winners for Best Picture in anticipation of the Oscars next month. On Friday I was watching The Last Emperor on Netflix because it was the last day it was available. Wouldn’t you know it, I had about 30 minutes to go and my internet went out for the night. Checked to see if I could still watch it in the morning, but no. At least my library has it so I put it on hold along with some other Oscar winners. I’ve also started watching The Big Bang Theory series, and I’m nearing the end of the second season. Sooooo hilarious, especially for a geek like me.

For the Bloggiesta, yesterday I put in dedicated ‘facebook like’ and retweet features on every post. Even though I already had an all-in-one social plugin for this, it seems you score better on some SEO ratings if you have dedicated facebook and twitter buttons.

Then today, I mostly just tried to figure out why my page was taking so long to load. I used Pingdom and some other sites to try to alleviate some of the bottlenecks on my blog. I don’t have it where I want it, but my site is quite a bit faster than it was at least. I’m also attempting to back up my blog so I can update to the newest wordpress installation. Always a scary scenario as I lost seven months of posts awhile back, which was a trying time, to say the least.

This coming week I’m having surgery on Wednesday, so I may be absent for a few days. Nothing serious, just a partial hysterectomy. I probably should have had this done years ago, so I’m happy it’s getting taken care of. At least when I’m recovering I’ll have no excuses not to read!

Have a great week, and happy reading, everyone!

Midweek Musings 01.19.11

sunday salon
<guid

If someone else is using that phrase, sorry, it’s just the best name I could come up with.

Anyway, I finished a long audio of The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova and should have a review of it in the next few days. I really liked The Historian so I thought I would give this one a shot. I definitely liked that the audio had different narrators, and I do love Kostova’s writing style, but this one seemed to just fizzle out in the end a little bit. I’d definitely read another novel of hers, though.

I also finished up Larry’s Party by Carol Shields yesterday. This one was probably my least favorite book of hers that I’ve read, but the final chapter made up for a lot. It probably took the book from a 3.5 star to a 4 star book for me. We’ll see, I’m still waffling on the rating.

Now I’m on to Small Island by Andrea Levy, another Orange book, and I’m enjoying it so far. With the emphasis on Orange books this month, I’m thinking that I might do my reading in themes for the entire year. Next month I’m considering Canadian fiction or dystopias, and in March I’d like to do some Pulitzer reading in anticipation of the new prize being announced in April. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now and I just think that if I focus my reading during this time, I might have better results than I did last year. Other monthly themes might be young adult, books in translation, Booker prize winners, etc. I’m also thinking of expanding that into movies I want to see, such as Oscar winning films in February.

Any other suggestions for themes? I’d love them!

Sunday Salon 01.09.11

sunday salon
<guid

Talk about a late Chistmas gift! I only unpacked about 25 out of 65 boxes or so, but some of those books I hadn’t seen for 2 or 3 years, and seeing them was like seeing long lost friends!

I finally have some space to put out nearly all my books, and I’m really excited about it. I even weeded out a few (which is always hard to do) that I’ll be taking to Goodwill or a used bookstore. And please don’t ask how many doubles I found. Hey, when I could pick books up at library sales for 25 or 50 cents, I could afford to make a few mistakes just to make sure I had the book. Now it seems the libraries are charging more and more so it’s not quite as affordable as it once was.

I’ll be taking pictures of my stacks when they’re all set up, and I can’t wait to show you all. I know I always love looking at the way others display their books. I really never get tired of it. I found a great site the other day that is nothing but photos of books and bookshelves. Some of you may already know about it, but if you don’t, you can find it <a

I had already taken off The Age of Innocence, The Help, and Shanghai Girls, which was painful to say the least. I did include some ya/children’s titles as well, though, because they were just that good. Still, I probably left off at least ten 4.5 star books, but what’s the use of a top 30-35 list? It just must be narrowed down somehow.

I’m also working on a stats post, but that takes a little time so look for that later in the week.

I read a lot of great books in 2009. Really great. It’s too bad I didn’t review more of them. I’m still going to try to at least get to the ones on this list, though. I owe them that much. I just hope I have the same success in 2010 as well.

Anyway, in the list below, the first five are ranked, while the rest are in no particular order.
<ol

It doesn’t seem possible. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving, though. I’m probably going to Colorado to see my side of the family so that’s always exciting.

Since I didn’t have a Sunday Salon last week, I’ll go ahead and tell you what I’ve read so far this month instead of just this week. I’ve listened to quite a few audios lately because I’ve been feeling under the weather (hence the lack of posts). These included The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist. All of them were 4 or 4.5 stars. Just great books so far for the month of November.

I was most surprised by how much I appreciated The Forest Lover. I had seen mixed reviews on it, but I heartily recommend this fictional biographical look at one of Canada’s foremost female artists. I knew I would probably like The Unit because I’m fascinated by dystopian fiction, and I did. Dystopians always scare me but in a good way. Afterward I’m so appreciative of living under our own government (though, of course it has its flaws). And I always take great delight in Smith’s books, this one was the last (so far) of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective series, and I’m not at all getting tired of them yet. The Good Thief was entertaining as well — it was sort of a mix of Dickens and Twain. I will definitely be reading more of Tinti’s works.

I’m not sure what I’m going to take up next, perhaps something for the Women Unbound challenge. By the way, The Forest Lover would definitely qualify for the challenge, and you could make an argument for The Unit to count as well.

Have a great reading week!

October Reading Report (Sunday Salon)

sunday salon
<guid

Always one of the best weekends of the year. Or did you spend the extra hour reading? I’m fairly happy with my stats this month, and I was really excited about my results for the R.I.P. Challenge. I ended up reading 22 books for it when usually I just get the minimum. Anyway for October, I read 11 books and 3900 pages. My favorite read was The Hungry Tide, and my spookiest read was Heart-Shaped Box Box. Joe Hill is really following in his father’s footsteps. If you like Stephen King, definitely read Joe Hill. My books were as follows:

Club Dead by Charlaine Harris (2003, 272 pp.)

Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris (2004, 291 pp.)

<a

I had a bit of a late start (really didn’t start reading until 10 am) and then crashed at 1am, so actually for the time I had available, I really did well. I had 15 hours that I participated, and I read just over 11. I do hope to hit the 15 hour mark in a future read-a-thon, though!

My strategy for any read-a-thon is really just to read as much as I can. I don’t do a lot of the mini-challenges just because I’d rather spend the time reading. I don’t visit other read-a-thoners very much during the read-a-thon, either, but I do enjoy going to everyone’s blogs the following day to see how they did and which books they read. It seems like quite a few people read the same books as I did, so it will be fun to compare notes.

Thank you organizers and cheerleaders for such a fun event!

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Nope, it was great as usual.
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? Everything!
5. How many books did you read? Two
6. What were the names of the books you read? The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
7. Which book did you enjoy most? Both
8. Which did you enjoy least? N/A
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? N/A
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? Very likely. I’ve participated in every read-a-thon since the very first!

<img

That is SO EARLY, and though no one else in my immediate family was happy about it, I was. To celebrate, I made some chili and let it simmer all day, and it was yummy, too. I love all seasons, and I especially love the first snowfall. It was so pretty with nice big flakes. I do feel bad for the farmers, though, which does include some of my family members. This snow sure didn’t help with getting the corn in.

This time of year is so great for reading. I love curling up with a book when it’s cold outside — especially if it’s for the R.I.P. Challenge. So far in October, I’ve already read four books for it (in addition to last month’s).

Club Dead by Charlaine Harris

Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

The Inhabited World by David Long

I’m also in the middle of listening to The Historian on audio and really like it. It fits the mood of fall extremely well. Unfortunately, it’s on my computer so I can’t finish it until I get my new power cord. I’m now reading The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny that I got from the library, and since I always have to have an audio going, I’m listening to The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh. I’m really impressed with this book so far, and I now plan on reading Sea of Poppies (shortlisted for 2008′s Booker Prize) at some point as well.

I don’t think I’ll plan on reading the new Booker winner, Wolf Hall, anytime soon. I have too many other books to read for challenges at the moment. I will, however, be reading one of Herta Müller’s (the new Nobel laureate) works as it fits in with the German Challenge I’m doing. Has anyone else read Müller? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Happy reading this week!

Sunday Salon 09.13.09

sunday salon

TSS
<guid

I’ve enjoyed it — even all the work painting and getting this house ready to sell (again), but I have missed having internet access and being able to visit blogs and comment on them. I’ve gone to the library for my own blog postings, but just haven’t had much time for other book blog community activity. I HAVE had time to listen to lots of audio CDs while working and I’ve devoured some print books as well, most notably the Twilight series, some of Sookie Stackhouse, and some of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series, all of which need reviews!

Series books can be a comfort in that you already know the characters, but there’s also a danger sometimes, of the series going on too long and becoming dull. For instance, even though Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective series has 10 books, I’m not tired of them yet. I love them and have not tired of them in the least. I’m pretty sure I won’t complete the Sookie Stackhouse series, though, and I haven’t made up my mind yet on The Inspector Gamache series. Usually I can tell by the third book or so if I’ll continue or not. Of course, much of anyone’s delight in a series is simply a matter of a reader’s taste as well. Every reader and book blogger is so different, but that’s also what makes reading books (and blogs) exciting. When I find a book blogger that has very similar tastes to my own, I definitely take notice, but I also enjoy reading those blogs whose owners have different tastes from mine, so that I can at least be knowledgeable about what’s out there.

Book Blogger Appreciation Week is this week, and though I haven’t been able to spend as much time commenting on my favorite blogs as I’d like to, mostly because of lack of internet access, I hope you know that I do appreciate the book blogging community very much.

Here’s to all of you!

The Time Traveler’s Wife (the film) (TSS)

sunday salon

movies

TSS
<guid

But with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana as the lead roles (two of my very favorite actors), I thought it couldn’t be too awful.

I really liked but didn’t quite love the movie. It was very emotional for me, just as the book was. Of course they changed some elements of the story (Gomez is all good in the film), but most of the movie was as good as I expected. The problem for me was that the beginning of it didn’t quite work for me. I’m not sure why, but I think they could have set up the storyline a little better than they did. Also, while Erica Bana was great,I didn’t like Rachel McAdam’s acting in parts — it was as if I could “see” her acting. I loved loved loved her in The Notebook, so I was surprised and disappointed in this. But, it was only in parts. In other sections of the movie I thought she was as fantastic as Bana.

My only caution is that if you haven’t read the book, it might be a little hard to follow. And if you haven’t yet read the book, I highly recommend you do so!

Grade: B+

August update

books general

sunday salon

TSS

The Housekeeper and the Professor
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
The Wednesday Sisters (a holdover from last year)
The Angel’s Game
The Tricking of Freya
Shanghai Girls

I’m not surprised at these percentages at all. I am backlogged on ARCs but I find myself really wanting to complete my challenges and read some older books. Of the ARCS I did read, none of them rated below a 4. They were all great, and I believe I am severely honest in my reviews.

ARCs don’t hold the magic for me that they once did, though I don’t fault any blogger for wanting to receive them. It’s just that for me, I don’t like feeling pressured in my reading. Then it becomes work. So, I still plan on reading (or at least give them the 50 page test) all the ARCs I’ve received, I just found there was no possible way for me to keep up anyway, so I might as well get to the books whenever I get to them. I really get enormous satisfaction in completing my reading challenges. That’s not to say that I don’t like new books — I do!! I’m just more careful about requesting ARCs and I do try to obtain many new titles at the library. I really, really love the library. Really. I also love pbs, bookmooch, and library sales because I can get even more books for a reasonable price! I don’t feel guilty at all about it because I do purchase about 1.5 new books per month.

Have you done a book source breakdown yet? I’d love to see your numbers!

Sunday Salon 07.26.09

sunday salon
<guid

I don’t always have to have a story wrap up neatly for me to enjoy it, but this one seemed a bit abrupt. Intuition by Allegra Goodman really surprised me. I enjoyed this very science-oriented book immensely. It has quite a bit of scientific detail in it, but the characters are very well portrayed. I was struck by how well Goodman showed both their faults and their positive attributes so well. I will definitely be reading more of her work.

I have SO MANY reviews to write. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to those soon.

Hope you’re enjoying your summer!

Sunday Salon 07.05.09

sunday salon

TSS
<guid

And I won’t be too surprised if my 25% translated works even goes up in the second half. I have some German and Japanese reading to do soon.

As far as the other figures go, I aim to go no greater than a 40/60 split either way on female/male authors; and although I think 71% is way too high a figure for books published in the 2000′s, the main reason for it is the Countdown Challenge, so I’m allowing myself a little leeway there.

My favorite book of the year so far was Bluehost.com, who I have been very happy with ever since I went to my own domain. But, they went to something called Simple Scripts instead of Fantastico, and it’s wiped me out. Yes, I know there are more ways to backup than just an xml file. I wasn’t worried, though. I should have been. I should have opened up the file and checked. I didn’t even know how to do that until today.

What have I lost? HOURS and HOURS of work. Yes, I will be able to recover some of it from my feed reader. I’ve not only lost posts, though, I’ve lot categories, tags, images, comments, custom fields, and my 2009 Books Read page and my 2009 Challenges page. I’m heartsick at this loss, but I’m posting this now so that if you use WordPress, you can have a heads up on what NOT to do.

Here’s the minimum of what you need to do. First, backup your blog by exporting it to an XML file. Then open that file using Notepad and make sure that your latest posts are at the bottom of the file. If they are, you’re okay. If not, you need to find your php.ini file and set your limits higher to something like 32MB and 90 seconds maximum. This is what the code will look like:

‘max_execution_time = 90 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds’
‘memory_limit = 32M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume’

Mine was only set to 30 seconds, hence the problem. My xml file said ‘Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/insertyourfilenamehere/public_html/wp-includes/link-template.php’

If you already have 2.7 (or maybe it’s 2.8) or above, you probably don’t have to worry as you can do an auto upgrade from your panel. So, I probably won’t have to worry about this again. A lot of good that does me now!

Anyway, there are other ways to back up your installation before you upgrade. I just wasn’t worried about it as my backup was always fine and it worked for me. Until it didn’t. Before upgrading, I would suggest that you follow the very detailed instructions that will let you know how to backup your blog properly in wordpress.

Sorry for the bitterness on a Sunday, but I hope this mishap will save someone else from the same grief!
