Twilight

I finally read Twilight.  I think I was (almost) the last to do so.  Even my sisters both bragged that they read the whole series before I even got to the first book.

So what did I think?  Well, for the first few pages, I thought, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do this… Then I don’t know if the writing got better or I just got sucked (pun intended) into the story, but I did end up liking it quite a bit.  I think Stephenie Meyer knows how to tap into a teenage girl’s mind and the book fits its audience quite well.  As far as this 40+ woman goes, well, I did roll my eyes at some passages, but the overall plot of the book is pretty darn good.

The movie was remarkably faithful to the book for the most part, and l quite enjoyed it when I saw it last year.  In fact, I’ll probably re-watch it soon and then go ahead and read New Moon so when talk comes up about the upcoming movie I won’t have anything spoiled for me.  Then I’ll read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn during Carl’s R.I.P. challenge (if I can wait until September).

You may remember my post about ordering the entire Twilight series in hardback for about $8.00. The UPS guy just dropped it on my doorstep. I’ll probably not get to all the books until 2009, but I may just have to squeeze Twilight in this year

Reasons to get a B&N Mastercard

I got the entire Twilight collection in hardback for a little over $8.00.

How?  In my email this morning was a coupon for 40% off one item if I used my B&N Mastercard.  That brought the price down to about $33.  Then I used a $25 B&N gift card that I got as credit for using my B&N credit card. One percent of all my purchases are considered points, and then when I get 2500 points, I get a $25 gift card.  I use this credit card for everything (but then I pay it off every month).

Total price including tax and free shipping: $8.25.

I love it!

Twilight: The Movie

I haven’t read the books yet, but I went to see Twilight today and dragged my husband and sons along. My kids were familiar with the basic story because all the girls (and a few boys) at their school are reading the series. They liked the movie but aren’t sure they’ll start reading the books. I think they were secretly hoping the movie would be awful so they could make fun of it at school.

I used to be an advocate of always reading the book before seeing the movie adaptation, but that is slowly changing.  Earlier this year I wanted to just enjoy the latter two Harry Potter movies just for the movies themselves so I watched The Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix before reading the books, and I was glad I did.  I’ll probably be glad I did in this case as well.

My thoughts on the movie without having read the book:

First, I always think it’s cool when the author (or director) has a cameo.  I was glad I saw Stephenie Meyer’s scene.  I didn’t even know about it before hand, but of course, I knew what she looked like, so I was able to tell my kids who she was when she came on screen.

I thought the acting was okay but not stellar.  Some of it was shaky in spots.  I did like Bella’s dad.  He was great.

I didn’t think James was scary enough.

I thought the baseball scene was cool.

Overall, I liked it, and I’m happy for Stephenie Meyer as this looks like it’ll be a successful movie series as well.  I’ll be reading at least the first two books of the series, probably next year.
